Let's Talk Snow Retention!
Snow retention is an important part of a properly designed roofing system — especially here in Western Massachusetts. These systems are engineered to hold snow in place so it melts gradually, instead of releasing all at once in a dangerous roof avalanche. Without the right setup, sliding snow can damage gutters, landscaping, lower roof sections, and pose serious safety risks near walkways and driveways.
Not every roof requires snow retention. Asphalt shingle systems naturally grip snow and often don’t need additional protection. Metal roofing, however — especially standing seam and exposed fastener systems — sheds snow quickly due to its smooth surface. That’s why properly designed snow retention is critical for many metal roof installations. Placement also matters. Retention is typically recommended above entryways, driveways, vents, pipes, and other roof penetrations where falling snow could cause damage or injury.
There are several types of snow retention systems, and choosing the right one depends on the roofing material. Continuous bar-style systems (often called snow rails) such as ColorGard by S-5! are ideal for standing seam metal roofs and can clamp directly to the seam without penetrations. Individual pad-style snow guards are commonly used on metal, slate, and tile roofs for a lower-profile look. Premium materials may require engineered solutions from manufacturers like Alpine SnowGuards to ensure proper load distribution and long-term performance.
At Peak, snow retention is never an afterthought. Every roof installation is carefully evaluated based on material, pitch, layout, and surrounding conditions. The goal isn’t just to install a new roof — it’s to design a complete roofing system that performs safely and reliably for years to come. When you upgrade your roof with Peak, you’re getting expert planning, quality materials, and craftsmanship done right the first time.
